Penang on the northwest coast of Malaysia, is famous for its colourful street art and being an UNESCO Heritage site. It’s also the place for cheap bargain shopping.
What are the 5 best places for cheap bargain shopping in Penang, Malaysia?
Gurney Plaza
Gurney Plaza is one of the most popular shopping mall in Penang. The mall is an eclectic mix of cheap and expensive brands and is where most locals and tourists go to shop. If you have a favourite brand, it will be here.

The shopping centre has a great vibe and with over 380 stores in a nine storey building, it caters to almost every budget. From cheap, affordable to expensive. The flagship department store in the mall is Parkson.
When I arrive in any new destination, I always ask for shopping recommendations. So who better to ask than a friendly Penang local? I was lucky to have Tan Boon Hooi as my Grab driver who drove me from my hotel to another nearby shopping mall. Tan said:
“Gurney Plaza is the only place I go to shop!” Many thanks for the great shopping recommendation Tan! 🙏
Open 10am to 10pm daily.

Prangin Mall
Prangin Mall is a bargain lover’s paradise. If you are looking for cheap bargain prices for fashion, tech, computer accessories or electronic goods, this is your place.
It’s a six storey building with over 600 stores with a layout of market stalls and some brand stores. The market section sells mainly no name fashion and electronics, but don’t let that deter you.
The items do the job. I picked up some great bargains for mobile and electronic goods that still have plenty of life left in them. If you buy a few items, some shops are even open to reducing the price.
Its easy to get lost inside with so many market stalls but well worth a visit if you have a few spare hours.
Open 10am to 10pm daily.
Address: No 33, Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong, George Town, 10100 Pulau Pinang.
Penang Plaza
One of the oldest shopping malls in Penang, Penang Plaza, is a local suburban favourite. It’s a smaller mall with about 50 retail stores offering a large range of goods in a three storey complex.
Open 9.30am to 10.00pm daily.
Address: 126 Jalan Burmah 10200 George Town, Penang.
Queensbay Mall
Queensbay Mall is a shopping mall close to the Penang International Airport. It’s a larger shopping mall compared to others in Penang, more upscale but still highly affordable.
A great place to visit if you have a few hours before your flight and its close location to the airport is a major draw card for travellers.
Open 10.30am – 10.30pm daily.
Address: 100, Persiaran Bayan Indah, 11900 Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang.
