Spotlight on Australia destinations that are worth visiting

When one thinks of Australia, Sydney or Melbourne immediately come to mind. However, did you know there are many other amazing places to see in Australia? In this spotlight on Australia destinations, we’ll feature places worth visiting that may not be on your travel list.

Australia is an enormous country. The distance between east and west coasts is approx. 4,030 kms (2,500 miles). From north to south coasts, Australia’s length is 3,685 kms (2,290 miles).

I’ll share some lesser known Australia destinations places you’ll be glad you checked out.

Let’s explore the Australian destinations of; Adelaide, Hobart, Broome, Cairns and Alice Springs.


Adelaide

Adelaide is known for its festivals, food and wine. This South Australian city is about 725kms (450 miles) from Melbourne. Its a more relaxed city compared to Sydney or Melbourne with a slower, laid back atmosphere.

Rundle Mall in Adelaide’s city is the go to destination for shopping. Looking for some entertainment and a place to eat? Then take a stroll over to Sky City Casino a few minutes walk from the city.

Barossa Valley about 70kms (43 miles) north east of Adelaide is the perfect place to taste Australia’s world class wines. With a selection of 150 wineries on offer, you’ll be sure to find a favourite.

Adelaide also has a proud German heritage with immigrants settling here after World War I. Hahndorf German Village about 28 kms (17 miles) south East of Adelaide is an example of this influence. You’ll find amazing food, wine and if you are after an authentic German cuckoo clock, this is your place!

How to get there:

You can fly to Adelaide from any capital city in Australia. The popular entry points include Melbourne, Sydney or Perth.


Hobart

If you’re a foodie traveller who likes sampling regional food, you’ll love Hobart. Hobart in Tasmania is the home of the famous Curried Scallop Pie. Locals rave about the Tasmanian Scallop and many cafes have the Curried Scallop Pie on its menu. Seafood is of top quality here as it is anywhere in Australia.

Hobart’s Salamanca Markets is a popular place to visit for shopping. Entertainment is catered for at the Wrest Point Casino where you can try your luck or have a nice meal.

If you enjoy all things sailing and visiting in December, the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is in full swing in the city. Hobart is also the birthplace of Australia’s very own Danish member of royalty, Mary – Crown Princess of Denmark.

How to get there:

You can fly to Hobart from any capital city in Australia. The most popular hubs are Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide. Alternatively, you can catch a ferry from Melbourne.


Broome

Broome in Western Australia was once the world’s largest pearling ports. Located 1,681 kms (1,045 miles) north of Perth it is also world famous for its pristine beaches.

The iconic Cable Beach is very popular with locals and travellers. With its 22 km (13 mile) stretch of white sandy beach, its the perfect spot to view sunset on a camel or relax and swim in this unique Australian paradise.

How to get there:

Fly to Broome from Perth or Darwin. Most Australian capital city airports fly to Perth which will be your main gateway to Broome.


Cairns

Cairns in Northern Queensland, is the entrance to the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef. Its a tropical paradise where rainforest meets reef. Many tours depart Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef. For a overhead view of the reef, why not take a helicopter ride to see this natural attraction?

Daintree Forest is another favoured Cairns day trip. The Daintree is about 110 kms (68 miles) from Cairns and transport is by four wheel drive (4WD). The world heritage listed Daintree is 1,200 square kms (463 miles) in length and is the oldest forest on the planet.

How to get there:

Flights to Cairns are from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Darwin and the Gold Coast.

Alice Springs

The Red Centre in the Northern Territory is an extraordinary landscape of vast desert, mountain ranges, gorges and Aboriginal sacred sites.

Alice Springs is part of the Red Centre and the Aboriginal Art capital of Australia. Alice Springs is also the gateway to many popular tourist attractions such as Uluru, Devils Marbles and others.

Want to visit Uluru (Ayers Rock)? From Alice Springs its a one way (279 miles) trip south to Uluru to see this spectacular monolith. Devil’s Marbles is another possible day trip 412 kms (256 miles) north of Alice Springs.

How to get there:

Get to Alice Springs from hubs such as Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin and Brisbane.
