Supermarket
If you are looking to save money on eating, visit a supermarket. Eating out at a restaurant is great fun, but doing it regularly costs big money. Good quality fresh food is available in supermarkets and you can get ready-made meals for a fraction of the cost of a restaurant meal. This popular hack is a no-brainer and will save you money.
Load up on fresh fruit, which is a Hawaiian speciality. Have you tried out the pineapple? It is to die for!
Can’t get to a supermarket? Go into a local ABC store which are in multiple locations across Honolulu which stock fruit, drinks and ready-made meals plus other products. Be aware prices will be a bit higher compared to the supermarkets.
Shopping discounts
Honolulu shopping is awesome with so much variety to choose from. If you are buying several items, look out for discounts such as ‘buy one, get the second one at 50% off’ or similar promotions.
Retailers love customers who buy in bulk and reward them accordingly. Don’t be afraid to ask for a discount. You won’t know unless you ask. Go on. What do you have to lose?
Also some retailers offer discounts if you sign up to their email list. Ask at the counter before handing over your money.
Walking
The best known and cheapest way to save money on transport costs is to walk everywhere. All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes, and a plan. Not only will you save money, it’s fantastic for your health.
If you are staying in Waikiki, most tourist attractions and shopping malls are close by. If you need to use transport, make sure you grab a daily ticket for TheBus.
Credit card
Are you taking cash or a credit card with you to Honolulu? If you convert your local cash to US dollars, you’ll pay commission on the changeover. If you don’t spend all the purchased foreign cash at the end of your trip, you’ll pay for conversion fees again. Double hit to the wallet.
A cost-effective alternative is to use a credit card and always select the ‘US dollar’ payment option if you are an international tourist.
If given the option of paying in US dollars or your local currency, always select US dollars. You’ll save on additional currency conversion and the credit card provider’s exchange rate is considerably better.
