Kangaroo Island has a unique position in the world. With a population of 5,000 people living on the island, animals outnumber humans by three to one. The island’s remoteness and lack of introduced predators allow animals to thrive. So it’s Australia’s own island wildlife sanctuary that protects and rehabilitates animals.
If you are looking for a slow, relaxing getaway while being immersed in nature, Kangaroo Island should be on top of your list. If you are an animal lover and visiting South Australia, this is the perfect place for a day trip.
Let’s have a closer look at Kangaroo Island – 5 best attractions to add to the itinerary.
Seal Bay
Seal Bay is on the south coast of Kangaroo Island and is home to the Australian Seal lions. There are 10,000 seals on the island and they love to lie on the wet sandy beach when it’s hot.
These 400 kilogram animals travel to hunt and can go up to 100 kilometres to the nearest continental shelf to find food. They avoid predators such as sharks by zigzagging through the water.

While the seals’ main diet is fish and other smaller marine animals, I was shocked to find out that seals will also eat penguins if they are hungry. No, not the penguins!
The seals also have a unique way of eating. They put food on their belly while swimming in the ocean and bend their necks to digest it.

Remarkable Rocks
Remarkable Rocks is on the West Coast of Kangaroo Island, and people from all around the world come to see the social media worthy scenery and prolific wildlife.

The famous wind sculpted rock formations on top of a granite dome have taken shape by the effects of rain, wind and pounding waves over the last 500 million years.
To get to Remarkable Rocks, you’ll need to travel to Flinders Chase National Park. The National Park is home to koalas, kangaroos and wallabies and other Australian animals as well as several bird species.

Admiral’s Arch
Admiral’s Arch is another scenic spot near Remarkable Rocks. It’s also home to a colony of long-nosed fur seals who frolic at the bottom of the rocks. Much like the seals at Seal Bay, you’ll find them either laying on a rock sun baking or having a swim to cool off.
There are wilderness trails that you can walk to get to the good vantage points to see more seal action. There are also dolphins in the area, but I didn’t see any on my visit.
Kangaroo Island Wildlife Sanctuary
A visit to Kangaroo Island is not complete without a visit to a wildlife sanctuary. Kangaroo Island Wildlife Sanctuary is the place to get up close and personal with kangaroos, koalas, penguins, meerkats, and other animals.
If visiting Seal Bay, it’s on your way back to Kingscote.

Kingscote Jetty
Once you arrive back in Kingscote, head to the jetty. The jetty is just off the main street of Kingscote and you’ll see more birds and pelicans. If you like to people watch, claim your spot on the jetty and watch the world go by. If you like to fish, it’s also a brilliant spot to try your luck.
Tours
There are many tours and activities you can do on Kangaroo island. If you like swimming with the dolphins or going on animal related tours, you’ll love it here.
Or you can take it easy and grab a nice seafood lunch, relax and enjoy this stunning and peaceful part of the world. I’m sure you’ll fall in love with Kangaroo Island like I have. See you there!
