Making the most of your travel dollars

There has always been strategies and hacks for saving money on travel. Whether you are looking for the best travel deals or navigating the world of points & miles.

In part one of this two part blog, you will learn how to make the most of what you have. Some easy and simple tips to help you save more money.

How to save money on travel

You’d be surprised at the amount of options available such as booking online, prepaying, travelling in low or shoulder seasons and at off peak times, taking multi-stop flights and considering exchange rates.

Book travel online and don’t use a travel agent

If you book with a travel agent, the price you receive includes their commission. If you book online with a travel company direct, you’re charged a lower price as there is no commission.

The travel company may even throw in added extras such as free breakfast in the case of a hotel booking.

Booking all your travel online will take a bit more planning, research and time but is well worth it. It can seem overwhelming at first, but take it step by step. It becomes easier the more you do it.

Go on, I know you can do it! 💻

Book ahead and prepay for travel products and activities

Before you leave, make sure you have everything paid for in advance. Big discounts are offered by travel companies such as airlines, hotels and more if you pre-pay.

If you pay after the trip, you will be charged more money as the cost is in the currency of your destination.

So for big savings, prepay prepay! 💰

Travel in low or shoulder seasons

When you are looking at the price of airfares and travel products, a tip to save the most money is to travel in low to shoulder season. Avoid high season as this is the most expensive time to travel.

Low season is where there is less travel demand. There will be fewer tourists travelling to the destination, the weather is not as good and prices will be lower.

Shoulder season is where travel demand is starting to increase. You’ll see more tourists at the destination, weather will be improving and prices will be getting more expensive.

You may notice airlines will offer more sales in these periods as demand is lower. ✈️

Travel in off peak periods

In addition to travelling in low or shoulder seasons, you will save big money if using flights that leave in off peak times such as very early in morning or late at night.

I know, getting up early or staying up late is a bit of a hassle. However, you can always catch up on sleep inflight!

Guaranteed savings by using this technique alone. 🌅

Travel on multi stop flights

If you aren’t in a rush to get to your travel destination, then a multi stop flight is ideal. It will also save you money.

These sort of flights stop at multiple points on the way to your final destination which means it will take you longer to arrive. But just think of the different places you will see on the way.

Consider destination exchange rate

Travel when your destination’s currency is positive against your local money. If you travel to a country with a strong exchange rate, you will lose money in the conversion.

Keep an eye on currency rates ahead of time. If they look good, purchase some cash in advance. This in turn will mean you are saving money on costs. 💱
