Compare prices first before you bargain.

They may sell those nice shoes you want at different prices. Have a walk through the market and do a quick scan or ask sellers what their prices are. You can then work out what the average sale price is for an item.

Ask other buyers what they paid for an item.

If you see someone who has recently bought the same item, approach them and ask what they paid for it. Go on, be brave!

Ask a trusted local the price range for the item.

If you know beforehand, ask the hotel staff for their advice about the ideal price for an item.

What’s the item worth?

Based on your research with comparing prices, work out what the item is worth to you and what you are prepared to pay.

Are there times of the day like opening or closing, where you could get a bigger discount?

Sellers may be more accepting of your bargaining when they are opening or closing for the day. This could mean big savings for you.

Be friendly but firm when bargaining.

You never know what a little friendliness could do in getting a great deal. Be firm but reasonable in your negotiation and do it with a smile.

Be patient, bargaining takes time but will definitely save you money.

Don’t show your enthusiasm.

Try to remain calm and don’t show your enthusiasm. If you act excited, this shows the seller that you must have the item and you will not get the best price.

Don’t dress rich.

If the seller thinks you are rich, they will automatically quote you a higher price for an item. Leave expensive jewellery and/or other valuables back in your hotel room.

Don’t tell the seller your ideal price.

Keep your ideal price to yourself. If you tell them this information, it puts you in a weaker bargaining position. It shows interest and the seller may increase the price.

When bargaining, always start with a low offer between 50% – 75% off the quoted price.

I know this sounds low and the seller may be a little shocked, too. But by starting low, you have more room to move when negotiating. Keep counteroffering with small increases until you have the price you’re willing to pay.

If buying multiple items, ask for a discount.

Use your power to score a discount when buying multiple items. The more you buy, the more discount you’ll receive.

If the last price is not suitable, don’t be afraid to say thank you and walk away.

The seller will usually follow you and agree to your price. Be ready to not buy if the price isn’t reasonable.
