Zenkoji temple
There are many activities to do at the temple. Here are some ideas to consider.
Incense burner
On approach to Zenkoji temple, stop at the main incense burner. Grab hold of the incense infused air as it blows out of the burner and direct it towards you. The incense purifies the physical being, bringing health and good fortune.
Rub the statue
As you enter the main hall of Zenkoji, give a coin donation and rub the Obinzuru-sama statue for good health. If you rub the area of the statue body that corresponds to your aches and pains, you will be cured.
I rubbed the statue a few times in different body parts for extra luck.
Worshipper’s Hall
Go inside the Worshipper’s Hall, kneel at the altar and say a silent prayer for good fortune.
From the Worshipper’s Hall, you’ll enter the inner sanctum of the temple. You’ll need to remove your shoes and keep your socks on for the duration of your time inside.
Underground Passageway
Walk through the pitch-black tunnel below Zenkoji’s Main Hall if you’re feeling brave. Explore the darkness to find the key to Paradise. Release worldly thoughts, engage in self-reflection, and experience spiritual awakening as you walk through the darkness.
As you enter the tunnel, free your right hand of all belongings and place them in your left hand. Use your right hand to feel your way through the tunnel. Keep hold of the wall to lead you to the exit.
Don’t turn on any lighting devices, including digital cameras or mobile phones. Rely on your senses to navigate your way out of the tunnel.
The underground tunnel is the place to experience the world without light after our death. According to legend, touching the key below the principal image guarantees your entry into paradise (heaven).
